We were super excited to host this year’s CHI NL Community Event and welcome the Dutch HCI community to the University of Amsterdam (UvA) on Friday, the 29th of May 2026. The event was a great success, featuring a full-day of thought-provoking presentations, with around 80 registered attendees from 24 organisations across the Netherlands. The day was a great opportunity for members of the HCI community in the Netherlands to network, as well as hear presentations of CHI papers that they might have missed at the conference.
The event was held at the former surgical theatre at the UvA’s new library on the Vendelstraat, and began with opening remarks from Abdo, who also gave an introduction to CHI NL. This was followed by a fascinating presentation by our keynote speaker Prof. Pablo César, Towards Volumetric Video Conferencing, where he spoke about a number of interesting projects he has been working on over the years on social VR and volumetric capture.
Following a short coffee break, we then moved on to our first round of presentations for the day, which featured the following speakers:
- Cristina Zaga: Participatory AI Justice in HCI: A Scoping Review
- Nazli Cila & Dmitry Muravyov: Designing with Fallibility: Examining the Knowledge Politics of Agency, Methods, and Motivations in Robot Failure Research
- Catalina Lagos Rojas: “Are Compliments Bad Now?”: Comparing LLMs and Human Interpretations of Gender Microaggressions in the Workplace
- Céline Offerman: Sex after Cancer: Co-Designing Bespoke Care Technologies for Post-Cancer Bodies
This was followed by a lunch break and a second round of paper presentations, including:
- Piera Riccio: Between and Beyond: Designing for Identity Complexity in HCI
- Yuhui Xu: Conversing with Objects toward Fluid Human and Artificial Identities during Life Transitions
- Shanshan Chen: Enhancing Children’s Self-Reporting in Chatbot Diaries through Rhyming Style
- Yonghao Hu: Measuring Visual Span in VR and Desktop Reading: A Comparative Study
Another coffee break followed which was to serve as a precursor to the third and final round of presentations for the day:
- Floris Jansen: Decidos: Accessible, Usable and Secure Voting in Low-stakes Elections Using Identity Wallets
- Simon Parkin: “What I’m interested in is something that violates the law”: Regulatory Practitioner Views on Automated Detection of Deceptive Design Patterns
- Anna Ida Hudig: “It’s Just a Wild, Wild West”: Harnessing Public Procurement as an AI Governance Mechanism
- Kiwi Dai: Beyond Domestication: Differentiating Mental Models from Primary and Secondary Users in Smart Home Lighting Systems
Things were going incredibly smoothly at this point, much to the delight of the organizers. People actively and respectfully engaged in the project presentations, asking challenging but fair questions to the speakers. It was at this point in the day that the skies opened and hit the building with a torrential deluge. We sat smugly, looking out at the rain pouring down on the city outside. However, a member of the audience noticed an ominous drip at the back of the lecture hall. A swift call to facilities was followed by the lights and electricity in the room going out. Here, we owe a special shoutout to our final speaker Kiwi Dai for taking the technical failure in her stride, and presenting a compelling analog rendition of her presentation.
The community event closed with some brief remarks from Prof. Judith Good, head of the UvA Digital Interactions Lab, who hosted the event. The skies cleared just as the event proper ended, and we then left for a group dinner across the canal. It was an exciting end to another successful CHI NL community event, and we look forward to the next one!
